Insanity Day 24 – Plyometric Cardio

Additional notes for yesterday Day 23: I already reported my Insanity workout, but more of note happened later in the day. We had family visiting the city, staying in Manhattan. This led to 2 things, one good and one bad. First, I did a lot of walking, and according to my devices I burned more calories walking than I did in my Insanity workout. Second, we ate out at a Chinese restaurant, and although one of high quality, not so heavy on salt and carbs, I still ate more of those than I would have normally. Thanks to the walking, I still met my calorie target but the salt and carbs led to a water gain of 2.5 pounds overnight. One pound of that was gone after my workout, and the rest I’m sure will disappear in 2-3 days, but it still annoys me.

Insanity Day 23 – Cardio Power and Resistance

Cardio Power and Resistance — Done.

In fact, Cardio Power and Resistance is done for the last time, for this round at least. It’s my favorite workout of Month 1, so I’ll miss it, but today I wasn’t feeling it. Still, I got through, In addition, it seems that I might be seeing some movement on the scale after almost none in the first three weeks. People said that that is how it sometimes happens and maybe it will be true for me, too.

Insanity Day 22 – Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs

Yesterday was Rest Day. Today was Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs: 843 calories according to the HRM.

Also, for fun, I kept track of water intake and loss. Stop reading if you’re grossed out thinking about sweat.  Read on if you’re curious about how much sweat you might be throwing off while exercising.

Before the workout I weighed myself. I drank 4.5 cups of water during the workout. Converting to weight, that’s 2.25 pounds (“A pint is a pound, the whole world round”). So during the workout I added 2.25 lbs of water weight. But when I weighed myself at the end of the workout, I lost 1.5 pounds. That means I had to have lost 3.75 lbs when you account for the water I added. Most if it was probably water, let’s say 3.5 lbs just to keep round numbers. That means 3.5 pints, or 7 cups of water lost in the workout. If your shirt and towel are drenched, that’s why.

Insanity Day 20 – Plyometric Cardio Circuit

 Week 3 done. Rest day tomorrow.
I’m going to be travelling soon and wondering about doing Insanity in a hotel room. I figure I’ll have the room but some of the moves are hard to keep quiet for those on the floor below. Especially Level 1 stuff  “JUMP in – JUMP back – JUMP in – JUMP back!”
I’m not exactly Nuryev on those and there are a lot of THUDs. It’s a Marriott Courtyard, so its fairly recent construction and hopefully a decent carpet, and I will try to schedule myself to workout during reasonable hours. But one man’s reasonable hour is another man or woman’s ungodly noise.

Insanity Day 18 – Cardio Recovery

One of the benefits of having started on a Saturday is that the end of each week always seems to surprise me. It’s only Tuesday and I only have 2 workouts left before I’m done with Week 3.

In addition, in both Weeks 2 and 3 I managed to approach Cardio Recovery thinking “this is going to be almost like a day off,” and then I am reminded during the workout how hard some of the movements and poses are to hold.

I am starting to notice better results in my upper body and arm strength, however. In the section of Cardio Recovery where you do (I think) 2 sets from Low Plank, and then 2 more sets from the position with knees bent but off the floor, I managed to get to halfway through the last set before I couldn’t hold myself up any more. When I started I’m not sure I made it through the first set even. Next week I fully expect to get all the way through.

The extra time spent exercising on these two workouts combined I can handle. The extra time before I can move on to the rest of my day is the hard part. I’m going to have to work to fit Month 2 into my schedule better.

Insanity Day 15 – Fit Test (Second Time)

Accountability Day 14, Friday Aug 3, yesterday: Rest day. I rested. Yay me! But I also kept on my nutrition plan so that was good.

Today – measurement and fit test results.

Weight 246/244.8 -1.2 lbs

Waist 46/43.5 -2.5 in

Hips 47/45 -2 in

Chest 42.5/41.5 -1 in

R. Arm 14.5/15.0 +0.5

L. Arm 14.0/14.5 +0.5

R. Thigh 25.5/25.5 0

L. Thigh 25.0/26 +1 (might be a measuring inconsistency)

 

Weight is within the range of noisy data, but the inches are going down and up in all the right places.

Overall I am very pleased with these results. The 2.5″ lost on the waist was a very positive shock. I feel my pants are a bit looser, but I did not expect 2.5 inches.

An hour or so after my Fit Test I felt that I needed more, so I added a Cardio Abs workout today. I was much better at doing the last few exercises, although anything requiring upper arm strength is still my weakness in the whole Insanity system. It’s getting better, but slowly. Makes sense because I’m at the age where if you don’t work at building up muscle (and I have not been doing so until now),  you will lose muscle.

Insanity Day 13 – Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs

Rough day.

First time doing both Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs, and unfortunately it was one of my worst energy days from the moment I started. 10 seconds into Pure Cardio my legs felt like my sneakers were lined with lead, and it never got any better. I pushed through both workouts, one directly after the other. I had to leave early to make a doctors appointment (routine), and so skipped the cool down for Pure Cardio and the warm up for Cardio Abs to save a few minutes. Don’t think it made a difference. Felt better for having pushed through a workout with low energy, but still felt weak. Never got better all day, and even felt stiffness in my knee, which had seemed to go away, and my back stiffened up. Nothing terrible, just a lot of little annoyances. This was so contrary to my experience so far where every day I attacked the workouts with more energy and left them feeling better and less tired.

One positive — at my medical appointment my BP was lower than it’s been in years.

Feel better today (except back is still stiff), and happy to have the scheduled day off. Also woke up today weighing 2 lbs more than yesterday without being able to determine why (ie no major spike in salt or carb intake). Hope to attack the fit test tomorrow feeling refreshed. Will post results and measurements.

So far, I just keep feeling better both during and after each workout. Also back to eating right. Not much more to say, but looking forward to retaking the fit test in a couple of days.
