Insanity Day 35 – Fit Test Report

Fit Test # 3. As previously discussed, I did it last night after work, 2 days early.  That lets me keep today as a rest day, and I will not have to do both the Fit Test and the first session of Month 2 on the same day. And oh my am I happy with the results:

Insanity Day 34 – Core Cardio and Balance

Two utterly inconsequential peeves I just need to unload:

1. In Core Cardio and Balance, during the Football Shuffle with claps, the team messes up the rhythm when Shaun T drops back to talk to the guy in the back left of the formation. They skip a beat for some reason and it messes me up every time.

2. I’m looking at the Calendar and it calls next week Week 5. What’s up with that, Shaun T? This is Week 5. Just because it has a name, Rest and Recovery, doesn’t mean it doesn’t count. You can’t fit 60 days into 8 weeks (plus, Insanity actually lasts 63 days not 60, but that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms). It’s just math.

Mini-Rant over. Core Cardio and Balance, and Recovery week is done. Tomorrow is rest day and Month 2 starts Saturday. If I feel strong tonight I expect I will do  the Fit Test tonight so I don’t have to do it and the first Max workout on Saturday, while keeping tomorrow a rest day.

Insanity Day 33 – Core Cardio and Balance

Accountability Day 33 Today August 22. Core Cardio and Balance. Not getting tired of the workout, as I noticed some did when doing it six days in a row. I have only one time left and I think I’ll miss it. Today for the first time I got through all 5 segments of the shoulder burns at the end without putting my arms down or pausing at any point. Now I’m deciding how to modify the next few days since there appears to be a consensus that doing both the Fit Test and Max Interval on Day 1 of Month 2 is insane even by Insanity standards. One option is to do them the same day, which would be Saturday for me, but split them up by several hours, but that doesn’t appeal to me. I might do my last Core Cardio and Balance tonight before bed, then Fit Test tomorrow, Friday rest and Max Interval Saturday. Or Last CC&B tomorrow morning, Fit Test tomorrow night, Friday rest and Max Interval Saturday.

Insanity Day 32 – Core Cardio and Balance

Only 2 days left in Rest and Recovery week. I’ve seen improvement, especially in my balance. Those last 2 sequences are not cardio but they are killer tough and I’m holding the positions longer on the one-legged leg burns and the crazy shoulder burns.

And then, wow, those first two shoulder stretches, right after the shoulder burns, feel great.

Insanity Day 31 – Core Cardio and Balance

Core Cardio and Balance again, and I’m finding that I like the repetition of recovery Week.  This also marks the half way point of the program (9 weeks = 63 days, and since the last day is a Rest Day, then today Day 31 is halfway to the last workout day).  I’m tempted to visualize my progress as climbing a hill. If that were the case, then at the halfway point I reach the summit, but I don’t think it’s an easy downhill ride from here. Month 2 promises to be tough.

Insanity Day 30 – Core Cardio and Balance

Core cardio and balance, Day 30 today August 19, done.

Here is a good article I just found that tries to test the accuracy of a variety of calorie counting devices in Wired Magazine:

I think the lesson from the article is not that certain brands are better then others, but that devices that use the right inputs and algorithm give the best results. Some devices measure body temp, or movements, and others rely on heart rate, etc. Devices that rely most on heart rate seemed to have the best results, but a device that combines heart rate with GPS etc might be best, as long as it gives the most weight to heart rate.

I am so far pleased with my Polar FT4.

Insanity Day 29 – Core Cardio and Balance

First time doing this workout and I like it.

More interesting to report, I started 4 weeks ago so today was time to update measurements. Order is original, 2 weeks, 4 weeks (today) and total difference

Body Fat Percentage

First Reading 26.6 (taken 6 days into the program)

Today 26.0

I very pleased overall, especially with the losses on my waist (4 inches!) and chest. The arms are a puzzler, as they actually grew in the first 2 weeks and then came down beyond the start point in Week 4. My best guess is that in the first 2 weeks I added muscle to my arms, and lost my fat elsewhere. In the past 2 weeks I must have lost weight in the arms. Either that, or I’m unable to operate a tape measure with any consistency.

The Body Fat percentage seems like a small loss, not just in total but when compared to the loss of inches. It’s possible I lost more in the first six days, but I’ll never know because I had no way to measure them at the time. Once I started the program I immediately decided to buy a BF scale and can now track it, but I have doubts about its accuracy. I’ve also tried using the calipers and cannot generate consistent readings one moment to the next.

Insanity Day 27 – Plyometric Cardio

Plyometric Cardio Circuit. Done! Week 4 Done! Month One DONE!.

Off day tomorrow. I love the workouts, but I also love it when I look at the schedule and it says next workout in 2 days.

Today during Plyo Cardio I really concentrated on my pace, and tried to match what the folks on-screen were during. Shaun T keeps stopping to check on the others, so I tried to focus on Rachel as much as possible, because she just seems to be a machine — never going crazy fast but also never ever lagging. I was happily surprised to see that, except for the pushup/upper plank related exercises (still my weakness) I was able to keep up with her on pretty much everything, from the warm-ups to the end.

Insanity Day 26 – Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs

Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs: Done and done. I might regret saying this, but I’m starting to look forward to the challenge of Month 2. I certainly haven’t conquered the Month 1 workouts: there are still some combinations that I cannot complete. But I am finishing them as best I can with less effort and a lower heart rate every time I do them. Today I pushed like a lunatic during the parts of the Pure cardio workout that give me the least trouble: mountain climbing and the one where you bring your knee up to meet your palms. Because they are “easy,” I can speed up the most, and when the sequence ended, my heart rate barely moved.  One more workout and I’m done with Week 4, and on to Recovery Week.

Also, I’ve decided to place an order for the Results and Recovery formula. I think it might help with the Month 2 workouts. I’ll report on how it goes.

Insanity Day 25 – Cardio Recovery

Cardio Recovery, the odd combination of rest and Mission Impossible. This was my last Cardio Recovery until I do Insanity again. Two more workouts and it’s on to recovery week.

Some of the Plank moves are still beyond me to complete in full, as my upper body strength has improved but quite enough, and the balance exercises are my true weak point. Not that I have bad balance — it is clearly a strength issue. I’ve also noticed that cheating on the balance moves makes it very hard to improve. When I cheat, my true balance is off, so I don’t find my true resting point. But if I don’t cheat on some of the exercises, I hold it for 2 seconds, reset, then 3 seconds, reset, then 1 second, reset. But maybe that is better than holding it for 20-30 seconds while resting my hand or fingertips on the wall. I understand there is a fair amount of balance work next week (the workout is called Core Cardio and Balance after all), so maybe I can improve then.
